Shabelle Drought Committee delivers aid to IDPs in Mogadishu

Network) – The Drought Committee of Shabelle Media Network on Sunday delivered humanitarian aid from Somali community in Seattle in the U.S. to the drought displaced Somalis in Mogadishu. The aid which was consisted of plastic sheets was intended for IDPs to hide themselves from the rains, cool and the sunshine.

Having donated about 280 plastic sheets to the IDPs in Hodan district of Mogadishu, they could be seen immediately building their huts which were made of acacia branches twisted into a dome shape and covered with ragged cloths and rice sacks, according to the committee. Ahmed Nurre Owdini, the chairman of Shabelle Drought Committee today’s humanitarian assistance from Somali people who failed to endure the hardship the drought people are facing.

He called upon the Somalis to continue supporting their brothers and sisters in Somalia, Mogadishu in particular. The IDPs welcomed cordially the move saying they had been subject to the cool and rains during in the night and day as well as sunshine.

The aid was the origin of $ 3,350 which Somali community in Seattle fundraised and collected each other to assist their brothers and in sisters affected harshly by the drought.

MOGADISHU – Somalia government forces on Tuesday morning clashed at Mogadishu’s Villa Somalia, where at least three soldiers were killed and three others injured. A government military officer was among those killed in the brief armed confrontation, according to witnesses. Some of the soldiers who have been involved in the clash were from Somali president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed while the others were loyal to parliament speaker Sharif Hassab Sheikh Adam.

The clash flared up shortly after two soldiers disputed, witnesses said, adding that they could hear heavy and light weapons during the clash.No comments were immediately available from government officials about the incident.

kamaal5HUDUR (Sh. M. Network) – At least two kids have been killed and three others hurt after hand grenade went off in Hudur town of Bakool region in southern Somalia, witnesses said Saturday. Local residents said the children were playing with the hand grenade and that brought about to explode. Elderly men were among those wounded in the blast, witnesses told Shabelle Media Network. They added that they wounded ones are in critical condition as they taken to local hospital in Hudur. Hudur town the regional capital of Bakool region and Al shabaab confiscated the town two years ago after fierce fighting with Somali government.

Network) – Some of drought displaced families in Mogadishu are complaining lack of health care as malnourishment and other curable disorders are the main factor in Somali children deaths. The internally displaced persons, who spoke to Shabelle, live in vulnerable huts made of old cloths and rice sacks. They said what they need after urgent aid food is health care. Some of them indicated that there are outbreaks of watery diarrhea, measles, and malaria as most of the children and women are anguishing from very acute malnourishment conditions. A woman at IDPs camps in Hodan district in Mogadishu said what situation makes much worse that adults and children defecate at one place, pointing out that there are no toilets. And that could make disease spread like a wildfire soon.

kamaal1MOGADISHU – At least 7 people including children, women and old people died of hunger in Lafole village in Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia. A woman contacted and told Shabelle Media Network that the people died in IDPs camp in the village of Lafole, about 25 kilometers south of Mogadishu. She said that hundreds of newly drought displaced people flooded the village which was a home for thousands of people who in the past fled the ongoing Mogadishu violence. She called on aid agencies operating in the horn of African nation to urgently reach at them, saying the drought affected Somalis are facing very desperate living conditions in the village. In the last few days, children dying of hunger and malnourishment were on sharp rise in many parts of the country including Mogadishu, the capital.

kamaal3MOGADISHU  At least two people have been killed in a fatal car accident in the restive Somali capital Mogadishu, witnesses said on Monday. The incident took place at the road linking between Benadir and Ex-control Afgoye junctions south of Mogadishu where a big truck and minibus collided. Witnesses said that at least 10 people were injured in the road accident. Women and children were among those hurt in the cars crash. The witnesses added that the wounded were immediately rushed to the medical facilities in the city for urgent treatment. Car accidents in Somalia are attributed to the drivers who are believed to inexperienced and unskillful. Somalia has not had any central legislation to aid in repair and maintenance of the streets and other social services since 1991.

  Mogadishu and suburbs have received  heavy rains which  blocked the ordinary Mogadishu traffic, while some main roads are full of water. Buses  doubled fair due to lack of transport while the demand is very high. The fair of public transport has jubmed to Sh.So 7000 to ,Sh.so 8,000 while previous was  Sh.s 4000 to Sh.s 5000.
